Episode 20: Listener Feedback

Interesting to hear some of the comments you guys have been getting. Have you gotten many negative reactions to the podcast?

Not too many negative comments. A few suggestions but we really haven’t had anybody let us have it yet.

However, they are welcome to call in at the number.

I just finished listening to your last podcast, and I want you all to know how much I have loved listening to these casts.

It is so interesting to hear a podcast with so many different types of Mormon voices…the entire spectrum of men from very active TBM to completely out of the faith, but I wonder if anyone has noticed the elephant in the room?

There is no woman on your panel.

No offense intended here at all, but do any of you really understand what it feels like to be invisible?

You are right, but not for want of trying. All attempts to bring a woman on as a full time panelist have failed. The position is currently open. Are you interested in auditioning?

The podcast is back on line and fixed. All of you who got the muffed up one should keep it as a collectors item.

I’ve thought of a topic that I really need to work out…

My Mormon friends and family are always accusing me of being disrespectful about Mormonism. They say that I am attacking them. My response is always that I never criticize individuals but doctrines, history, and policy. I also try and point out that if certain ideas are not challenged these ideas won’t change (like the policy of blacks and the priesthood).

Oaks says criticism is wrong even when it is true (which seems to be the mindset in Mormonism). But, how do I have a “respectful” conversation while at the same time criticizing Mormonism?

Thanks for the audition offer. The answer would be a definite yes if I lived in your area of the country! The Wasatch front, right?

Maybe you are having a hard time finding women because historically the Church has come down so much harder on us when we speak out?

Finding our voice seems like it has to be done in secret, and (in defense of men) I think LDS women are actually part of the problem. (We participate in silencing each other.)

I love the podcast; I think its the best thing since John Dehlin’s ‘Mormon Stories’. I hope Mormon Expressions runs for a long time to come.

I live in NC, George lives in OR, Jim is in the South, Tom is in Utah County, Mike is in Utah and Nyal is in Norway. There is no location and most of us have never met face to face.

Another great podcast, folks. I’ve said this before, but just wanted to mention again what a great thing I think you are doing – it’s never really been done quite like this before.

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head that might be fun to see:

* The perspectives of people in different stages of their faith journey (Mormon to secular, Mormon to other Christian, Mormon to non-Christian theism, and all of those in reverse.

* Aspects of mormon theology (examples: Grace vs. Works, free agency, etc.

* Mormon memories (stangest/most interesting experiences from the life of an LDS person – you could call for entries (setting the parameters you want) and read the best.

* What it is like to go on a mission

* Mormon urban legends (you suggested that earlier on another site and I think it would be fantastic)

* Living in the corridor vs. elsewhere in the world

Just a few thoughts to consider…keep it up!

If you could get Kirby and/or Pat Bagley on that would be a major coup. I would love to hear that.
