Several months ago, Mormon Expression sent out the call for listeners to submit their own personal essays. Listen to their voices.
Podcast: Play in new window
By John Larsen
Holy shipwreck, that was AWESOME!
I’m glad I’m not in the jury. I would have one heck of a time trying to pick one over another. They were all fantastic!
I love Andrew’s metaphorical essay about the block of ice, although I wish the recording was a bit clearer. It sounds like a bad phone connection. But man, that was well done!
I really loved Cody’s essay on the spirit. “With these caveats there is essentially no way to receive a negative answer to a prayer about the veracity of the Book of Mormon.” Kick ass! Cody, you should definitely put that on youTube, with some animation to back it up, ala Qualia Soup.
I made a kind of music video for my entry (the last one) with lyrics: Hinckley vs polygamy / Life of a Saint.
John, This worked out great with your brief introduction before each essay.
Great job everybody! Every single one was excellent.
Best. Fast-and-Testimony-Meeting. Ever.
I’d love to see this become a regular event (perhaps quarterly?). I wanted to submit but didn’t get my act together before the deadline. There’s no need to bribe me with prizes, getting to express in this fine forum would be enough. In other words, ‘I feel inspired to stand up and share my essay’.
Hey, I just got to work so I haven’t had a chance to listen yet, but I’m just stoked I made the recording! I would LOVE to make an animation… anyone know any good animators!
Good job Cody. Do you have a hard copy of your essay on the spirit/epistemology? I’d love to get one if you do. Very well articulated.
Yeah, email me at rees dot cody at gmail dot com and i’ll hit cha back!
Thanks for the compliment!
That was a fantastic song! I’d love to have that for my next musical number in church.
This was like sacrament meeting for apostates! Freaking awesome essays.
The best part about Apostate Sacrament Meeting is that the speakers are so much better! It has really been a pleasure to hear how each speaker approached the topic. Some pretty creative ones.
Wow! Just excellent essays. Each one so unique and yet powerful. I also loved the song! I concur that it was the best FnT meeting ever!
That is awesome! I really like it. Anyways, Andrew’s metaphorical essay about the block of ice was such a wonderful.
Thank you all for contributing. Here I am sitting at home listening rather than attending church and it is so much better.
Shifting Sands was great and well deserved its prize, but I’m a little bummed that the block of ice didn’t win the day. I particularly liked the line about how some people blow hot air on the block of ice.
I was really touched by the essay about the priesthood ban. It felt very personal to me. I grew up in the segregated South. Each town was (and still is) either black or white. I didn’t meet a black person until I was 15 years old. I certainly didn’t understand or question the implications of the priesthood ban. Salvation and exaltation are so tied up with priesthood. Now I see how condemning the ban was for both black man and black women. The temple is completely off limits. I feel so bad that I couldn’t see that before. Just makes me feel very egotistical and selfish not to see how these things affect people besides myself.
Does anyone know how I might obtain a written transcript of the essay regarding the [faulty] Mormon methodology for finding truth (i.e. emotions)? It was very well put.
