31: Ted and the Devil

Save the goldfish!

Your night terror story just brought up something I’d totally forgotten. My older sister – pragmatic, scientific, VERY intelligent – woke up one night so totally terrified by a dream she’d had that she crept into bed with our parents (I think she was 17 or 18 at the time). It freaked me OUT, hugely – particularly because my mum was a huge Satan believer (still is) and Satan was always more palpable, believable, than God was.

A little bit later I found out just what the dream was that had caused it all – she dreamed that I was praying but, apparently, in this horrifically satanic voice and manner.

Totally devastated me. Thought it was (yet more) evidence of how inherently evil I was. I need to ask my now apostate sister if she remembers that…

I loved this; you were both delightful. I love the gentle way Jenn probed for information and Ted’s oh so cute laugh. So thoroughly down to earth and natural as you both spoke of your early experiences in the church. I lived in Connecticut when I first immigrated from England for about 7+ months and I too loved the people there. It was at church in Manchester Connecticut that I first learned that women could bless their children if there was no priesthood holder around. Your ‘chat’ together brought back so many memories and especially my son’s experience with ‘Stan’. I wish I had known back then what was causing that weight on his chest and the inability to move – oh well, we move on and share our stories so that we all feel more normal, or recognize that everyone has a bit of crazy.
